The Northern Gateway Toll Road is New Zealand’s first fully electronic toll road where motorists don’t stop to pay the toll on the road.

On the toll road you can travel at motorway speeds with safer passing and reduced gradients.
How it works
Electronic toll collection uses sophisticated cameras and sensors to capture an image of your vehicle’s registration plate and assign the correct toll. You can pay by account, online, by phone, or at a self service kiosk. If you don’t have an account you can pay before you travel or up to five days later.
Tourist information
When travelling between Auckland and Northland tourists have a choice between using the Northern Gateway Toll Road - an extension of State Highway 1- or one of the free alternatives.
Future Toll Roads
Construction of the Tauranga Eastern Link road of national significance will start up to 10 years earlier than previously possible following the Government's approval for the route to be tolled, the NZ Tansport Agenty (NZTA) confirmed today.
